Start with the colour, then read the details
A golden finish catches the eye before a materials description does. In our gallery, that warmth comes from several different materials. Looking beyond the photograph helps you understand the particular piece you are choosing, especially when a pendant, chain and fittings use different metals.
Three pieces, three different combinations
Curious Magpie Jewellery’s Brass Oak Leaf Drop Earrings have polished brass leaves and sterling silver hooks. Their golden colour belongs to the brass; the product is not described as gold.
The same maker’s Gold Petite Twig Ring Necklace uses a different combination: a gold-vermeil pendant over sterling silver, paired with a 14ct gold-filled chain. The finish on the pendant and the construction of the chain are distinct details, so both matter when comparing pieces.
Rockpool’s Teeny Barnacle studs are listed in 18ct yellow gold. Their small clustered forms make the material itself the focus. Other Barnacle designs have their own options; check the exact listing rather than assuming every piece in a collection uses the same metal.
Choose with the whole piece in mind
Compare the pendant or earring body, chain, fittings and available variants together. Follow any care instructions supplied for that particular piece, and ask the maker if a material detail is unclear or especially important to you.
There is no single right way to introduce warmth into a jewellery box. You might choose a brass leaf for its silhouette, a twig necklace for its open texture or gold studs for their compact shape. The pleasure is in finding both a design and a material that suit you.
